I lost my Garmin emap (after four years successful use) this summer and
thought I would get a proper autorouting, talking postcode type device as a
replacement. Garmin twice replaced the unit (completely free of charge ) at
fourteen months and three years, so I am very happy with their service.
However, the Garmin units dont appear to have full postcode search.

Been reading the threads for a while on the Tom Tom.

I thought I could get the 500 and buy the full Europe maps later (to save
money) but current prices arent a vast amount more for the 700 with the
maps on and I cant find the prices for maps later. Also I assume I would
have to fork out for a bigger memory card.

Is it better to just get the 700 in the first place please?

Also, I used to use the emap for cycling (but had to plot and input the
route first).

I thought I could take the Tom Tom on the cycle but leave it in the bar bag
(because of the size). If I can ever afford it I will probably get a small
cheap unit specifically for cycling.

Would the 500 have a longer battery life, due to memory card against the
hard disk?

And I guess the 700 must weigh a bit more than the 500?

Should I be looking at a completely different device?

Thanks very much for any advice.

Paul

PS I find this web searching business hard work as different ads seem to
include, or not include the accessories, car mounts, external aerials etc.

I think that would be a seriously bad idea. In the bar bag you wont be able
to see it, its not waterproof at all so the bag had better be, the battery
would only last 1/2 day, and more importantly it doesnt look especially
vibration proof.

I had a Magellan Gold which was excellent for that, though you did have to
program the routes in, rather like yours. Are you cycling on or off road?

You might want to check out the Tomtom One, if you are going to be carrying
it round its significantly smaller than the 300/500/700 and it might be
better for any walking you do because of this. IMHO for bikes, robustness
is the main issue (inc waterproofness), followed by battery life, and you
really need a handheld for that but I think handhelds with auto routing tend
to be quite expensive.

As per your experience, when cycling i used mine more to confirm where I was
on a map than tell me where to go, in which case a TT One, suitably wrapped
up, might not be a bad choice. Not a good idea to leave it in the car
anyway.
