My Garmin GPS 12 crashed twice at the weekend. Now when I switch it on the
initial welcome screen with the spinning globe logo appears but it goes no
further. Left in this state it will eventually hang (no idea how long that
takes but it is over 30 minutes) but until then I can switch it off and the
back light works OK.

If I plug the data cable in it detects the unit and correctly reports the
software version (4.57) but cannot do anything else as I cannot set the
interface mode.

Anyone got any ideas, other than burying it deep in a bog?

Cheers

James

Panic Over

I managed to find the factory reset - hold down mark key while turning
unit on. Have now upgraded software which apparently avoids crashes in the
first place.

Cheers

Send it to me ;-)

First try forcing it to autolocate by holding down the Page key and
powering on.

If that does not work try the data reset - you will loose all user data
so download anything important first. Hold down the Mark key while
powering on then and press Enter when asked for confirmation.

If that does not work try the master reset by holding down the Mark
button while powering on then move the highlight from Yes to No, back to
Yes to No, back to Yes then press Enter.

Still no joy try updating the firmware to 4.60 available from

http://www.garmin.com/products/gps12/download.html

the update process might kick it into life again.

Even if the reset worked you might like to update to take advantage of
the updated magnetic variation tables.

Good luck!

My 12XL crashed two weeks ago :-( ALL data was lost. It cant locate
satellites as the time has set itself to 24th Jan 2004!!!
The time and date changes each time you reset it. If the date is wrong
it will never locate!! If you could set the correct date it may locate
correctly?
Garmin say it may cost up to Ł65.36 plus postage etc
Wonder how many other units have crashed which have been well looked
after?

It does not use / need the internal date / time / almanac when doing an
autolocate. You can force it to try an autolocate by holding down the
Page button when powering on. Autolocate may take 20 minutes or more
with a completely clear view of the sky. With obstructions it could take
a good deal longer.

Other things to try are in my other post in this thread.

I have not heard of many problems other than the memory battery low
issue.
