Are the maps on the Garmin 2610 for Spain as poor as they seem to be?
There seems to be very little street level detail for the smaller towns
- Mojacar for example - compared with my TomTom Go which has detailed
street maps for everywhere Ive been so far in Spain.

This isnt a TomTom is better than Garmin troll BTW. I have one of each
- I bought the original TomTom Go for one of the cars some time ago and
Ive just bought the Garmin for the bike. Im really hoping its my
ineptitude rather than poor maps.

Check out;

Youll see that Garmin (Navteq) only claim limited coverage in Spain.
Its a bit of a curates egg - good in parts. Some small villages are
covered, and some arnt - likewise, big towns. There appears no logic
to it, you take pot luck. I live further up the coast, and its
gradually improved in the last two versions. Murcia city coverage was
expanded, and Cartagena is now included in the latest version.

Thanks, that rather confirms what Im seeing. Its a bit disappointing
as the map data is obviously available and I wouldnt expect a
relatively small company like TomTom to have significantly better map
data that a global company like Garmin.

Thats not the only disappointment. The Garmin loses the satellite
signal more easily than the TomTom and seems somewhat slower in keeping
up with my position resulting in slower instructions which can be a
PITA in places with lots of close together direction changes. That also
results in it being slower to pick up the fact that Im off track. The
instructions sound much more natural on both the TomTom and the unit in
my Toyota compared with the Garmin which is somewhat stilted.

I rather regret buying the Garmin now and wish Id waited for the
TomTom Rider. That was what I was intending to do and I vacillated
before making the Garmin purchase but I wanted the bike GPS from this
weekend and the Rider is not yet available; I should have made my trip
without one.

Ill probably get rid of the 2610 when the Rider is released and buy,
if my current Go is a benchmark, a superior unit.
