Hi all,

I have a Garmin 296 and a remote antenna that I want to mount about 40cm
from the GPS unit. The cable on the remote antenna is a good 2mts too long
so is it ok to just coil it up and tie it out of the way or does coiling the
cable cause interference ?

Am I better of cutting the cable to the right length and fitting a new BNC
connector ?

Cheers..

Either would be just fine. However, if one end of the cable is moulded into
the antenna, you may be better off just coiling the wire - hold it together
with a couple of cable ties - in case you ever want to move it further away.
Sods law and all that....

A shorter cable will always be better for signal strength, however the
original will have had the plug fitted properly (we hope). A poor DIY
job could well be worse. Unless you have problems I would leave it
alone. Just dont coil it too tightly (3 inch dia loops is fine) and
dont put it where the cable will get squeezed.

You shouldnt have any problems if you just coil it up. Easy to test,
install with it coiled up and compare the signal strengths against that
with it unfurled?
