Im looking for an external Bluetooth GPS receiver suitable for TomTom
Navigator.

The official TomTom unit costs around 60.00 but I see that units with a
similar spec sell brand new for half that price on places like eBay.

I know that TomTom say you should use their devices but is there any real
reason not to use another SIRF111 device?

Perhaps the cheaper units have poorer battery life or less sensitivity? Ive
noticed that theyre all a bit bulkier than the TomTom unit. has anyone used
a cheaper generic GPS receiver with TomTom and if so how did it work out?
Can you recommend one? Thanks in advance.

Plenty of capable receivers available.

None at all

There are some that are smaller, many with better battery life, some
with removable/replacable batteries and some with additional feeatures
such as LCD displays, dataloggers etc.

As an example. I use the Wayfinder badged BT GPS with TomTom Navigator.
Its in fact a rebranded Royaltek RBT 2001, with sirf III. The unit is
tiny and runs for exactly 6.5 hours on one charge, here is one on eBay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150144667039 for
Ł32.90. There are also larger batteries on eBay that will allow it to
run for 18 hours.
