Hi
Regarding the Tomtom 910 speaking the street names ? does it say for example
turn left into Oxford Street and then turn right into Regent Street or does
it say the A123 etc.
Thanks From Eddie

It certainly always gives the Regent Street name. There may be places
where is also adds the route number but I dont recall any of those.

Its a mixture, where a route is only known by number then it will use
that i.e Turn left onto B3000, otherwise it will use the name.

Speaking street names uses a technology called Text to Speech (TTS) and
from TomTom only their 910 presently has TTS, but this same feature is
also available in certain models by other GPS equipment manufacturers.

My Nuvi does that and its stupid, stupid, stupid. If both name and
number are known it would be best to say them both, but if forced to
choose just one Id definitely go for the number, not the name. Thats
because the number is more likely to appear on a sign. Turn left onto
Watling Street is not particularly helpful when the sign says A5. The
problem is even more pronounced (!) at roundabouts, where signs showing
street names are virtually non-existent but road numbers are well
signed.

Maybe you have never made a turn into Regent Street London. As a reality
check, when youre in London ask a cab driver to take you to the A4201 :-)

Youre right, I never have. Do I take it that youre suggesting that the
signs saying Regent Street are mostly clearer than the signs saying
A4201? If so that would be most unusual.

I avoided cluttering my previous message with my ideal strategy if I was
limited to either a name or a number but not both. It would be this: if
turning from a numbered road, use the new roads number; if turning from
a road without a number, use the new roads name.

My knowledge of London is a bit sketchy but I think this would mean that
approaching from Oxford Street (A40) youd be asked to turn onto the
A4201, and I would hope that theres good signage indicating the A4201.
But approaching from (say) Mortimer St, youd be asked to turn into
Regent Street.

Even if that strategy doesnt work for Regent Street Im sure it would
work better than what we have now for most places that most people
drive.

Better would be the A4201 Regent Street, of course.

My impression is that the techniques for speaking directions are very
much in their infancy, and I dont think Ive ever made a journey
without spotting many simple opportunities for improvements to the
gibberish that my Nuvi pumps out. It gets me there, yes, but it could be
done so much better. The designers clearly havent made the slightest
effort to word the directions as a (British) human being would.
