Hello,

Im trying to get the tracks oo my Garmin foretrex 201 to show up in
Google Earth. I have Google Earth Pro and it does have the option to
import tracks from Magellan and Garmin units. However, when i connect my
Garmin (through the COM port), it is just greyed out (as if it doesnt
recognise that my Garmin is connected at all). I can download the tracks
into Mapsource okay using the same way, so it cannot be the fact that
the unit is incorrectly linked up to the PC or anything like that.

Can anyone suggest anything here ?

(Win XP media centre, 1Gb RAM, Pentium Dual Core)

http://earth.google.com/userguide/v4/ug gps.html seems to imply that GE
checks the com ports for a recognised GPS device. Most other software
requires that you select the com port in a list, but GE seems to skip that.

Have you installed the garmin drivers that it mentions in the above
link? It probably needs these if your garmin connects via USB. Our old
yellow extrex uses a serial cable, and as far as I can remember it was
recognised by GE without any assistance.

Have you configured the Interface on the 201? Under the Setup | Set
Interface option?

I find the best way to show the output from my 201 is to dump out a gpx
file and use the online tools at gps visualizer (google for the full
address)

This gives lots of options such as colour coding altitude, track widths,
fonts and a lot more. It will also output in many and various formats,
including Google Earth. Better still it takes seconds!

I have no connection to the site other than being a very satisfied user.

Im a big fan of GPS Visualizer also, use their conversion page when
exporting log files from the various data loggers we test.
