I am considering buying one of these, its main advantages to me for use in
the UK being:

Constant readout of current speed limit
TMC unit

Im not worried about something that shouts at me when it sees a speed
camera, I am happy to accept responsibility for my own driving.

My usual way of buying something new is to look at reviews on the
Internet, then buy it, then discover its an old model that doesnt work
very well and is about to be replaced by something at half the price. Id
like to avoid that if possible so does anybody here have any experience of
using this unit in the UK who can tell me what they think of it?

Many thanks.

The Becker runs Navigon software and IIRC its an older version than
that available on the Navigon branded devices. The Navigon 7000 has the
latest software which is a big improvement and Traffic as wella s
features like Lane Assist which graphically indicates which lane you
need to be in on any road where there may be a number of lane options.
It also has a larger screen although it is slightly more expensive.

Do you want/need European mapping? If so then my personal preference
would be the TomTom GO710 plus the Traffic Add-On if you want Traffic
Data. That would come in at the same price as the Becker.

Now thats worth its weight in gold, thank you very much :-)

I only need UK maps really. I was attracted to the Becker because of the
speed limit indicator it has and also the TMC which could save hours of
sitting in jams. I havent found another unit that seems to show the
current speed limit.

All the current TomToms have the speed limit data. The ONE UK for
example at about Ł170.

Traffic data on this has to be via Tomtoms PLUS Service which requires
a compatible Bluetooth phone and data plan. To get Traffic over FM
youd need to move up to the 510 but you may wish to await news on
Monday before making a final decision. New prouct announcement coming
then :)

Thats interesting, I havent seen it mentioned in anywhere, can you have
a permanent display of the current speed limit?

Last time I looked, the ONE could be got from PCWorld web, with collect
in store option available, for Ł141

Not quite, all V6 devices show speed which turns red when you are
exceeding the posted speed on a road where the speed limit data is
known.

Jeff, now I can speak about it! The new Tomtom ONE XL was announced
today. A widescreen version of the ONE with the addition of support
for TomToms RDS-TMC FM option.
