I have been looking at Amazon and the comments there.

One reviewer, reviewing the Nuvi 310 stated the TomTom requires an
external antenna if used in a car with a heated windscreen.

Id rather not use an external antenna.

What experiences are there of using TomToms with a heated windscreen
without using the external antenna?

Amazon are selling the Garmin Nuvi 310 for Ł158.98 and I am tempted by
it. But its not a TomTom...

Thanks

I dont think it is a heated windscreen that is the issue but a heat
reflecting (athermic) windscreen which is completely different. See
http://www.tomtom.com/products/accessories/accessory.php?ID
2&AccessoryCategory=7

This seems to be an issue affecting GPS signals so I assume the Garmin
would be the same.

Some athermic heat-reflecting windscreens block GPS signal reception
inside the car. (Or other vehicle)
I havent experienced and problems with heated screens blocking GPS
signals.

I have a Peugeot 307SW which has an athermic windshield and sunroof. I mount
my TomTom 1 with the supplied suckermount to the side quarterlight on the
drivers door. Reception even in cities is excellent, up to 12 sats and good
lock.

hope this helps

That comment is only partialy correct. Older generation GPS Receivers
had difficulty getting a fix in vehicles with Athermic coatings on the
windscreens designed to reduce reflection and heat.

Current generation receivers do not suffer this issue any more and that
includes TomTom ONE, all the GO X10s and many of the current Garmin
receivers.

At the lower end I would reccomend the TomTom ONE.
