I have a large paper map thats about 150 x 100 cm across. Whats the best
way of scanning this in so I can use it on my GPS? One large jpeg or several
smaller jpegs? The map has a few calibration points, but I suspect I will
have problems managing large high quality jpegs. And whats the best program
to use to calibrate the map? Ive heard it can be done in memory map,
although there must be others out there.

You could check out OziExplorer. This is an Australian shareware program
which is designed to use jpegs and other scanned or bitmap formats. This
program allows you to overlay GPS track data onto a scanned map on a PC.
Registering the program allows you to set multiple calibration points to
account for map distortions and the like. I have used it quite successfully
using scanned OS maps at various scales.

There is also MapMan by Keith Shepherd, which is pretty easy to use.

Assuming you have an A4 flat bed scanner, its tricky.

I resorted to drawing an A4 grid on the back of the map, then with some
careful folding and a fair bit of swearing, I eventually got a usable set of
scanned maps.

Its a good idea to have some overlap between the scans, 1cm should be
enough. Without any overlap theres a risk that you will have small gaps
where the A4 sheets join up.

I use GarTrip www.gartrip.de .

.I dont think it has the facility to download maps, but it will calibrate
maps and allow them to be used for route planning, download routes
to a GPS, upload tracks and display them on the scanned map.

You could get it scanned by a bureau (e.g. Service Point) but this is
expensive.

Otherwise buy an A3 scanner (<Ł100) and tile it together.

This may be of use; I use Anquet maps which are OS maps including the
standard 1:50000 series. You can buy the whole country coverage at once
or just the parts you need and its not too expensive. The software
allows me to download OS map areas for use on my IPAQ pda and it works
fine. Anquet can be found here:
