Assuming you have an A4 flat bed scanner, its tricky.
I resorted to drawing an A4 grid on the back of the map, then with some
careful folding and a fair bit of swearing, I eventually got a usable set of
scanned maps.
Its a good idea to have some overlap between the scans, 1cm should be
enough. Without any overlap theres a risk that you will have small gaps
where the A4 sheets join up.

.I dont think it has the facility to download maps, but it will calibrate
maps and allow them to be used for route planning, download routes
to a GPS, upload tracks and display them on the scanned map.
