Just been pointed towards http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/

Its one of those new e-petition things against the proposals to use
GPS devices to impose road pricing.

/Quote

The idea of tracking every vehicle at all times is sinister and wrong.
Road pricing is already here with the high level of taxation on fuel.
The more you travel - the more tax you pay.

It will be an unfair tax on those who live apart from families and
poorer people who will not be able to afford the high monthly costs.

Please Mr Blair - forget about road pricing and concentrate on improving
our roads to reduce congestion.

/EndQuote

Might be an idea to sign it if you agree with it. Think they need
750,000 signatures for it to be taken seriously by government.

I would suggest that this is *not* the correct forum to be discussing
the pros and cons of the proposed scheme (like thats going to stop you
:-) ) but as most of you no doubt drive, the scheme will affect you if
it goes through.

You are very out of date if you have just been pointed..... as it was done
to death some weeks ago.

Read a few of the daily papers online (eg. Telegraph, Times, etc). Youll
then find whether the facts quoted in the petition bear any resemblence to
reality, the connections of the proposer to a campaign group, etc..

because its an advert for the poll rather than a place to start a discussion
about the merits.

So?

My question still stands, Why bother posting it?.

If its an advert it shouldnt be posted to a newsgroup ... which are
meant to be for discussion.

1. The poster of the message did at least have the decency to start the
subject line with the letters OT, which, if youre such a stickler for
USENET rules, youll know is accepted as flagging the message as Off Topic
for the particular group in question. If you only want to see postings that
are On Topic, dont look at ones beginning OT

2. Its not a commercial advertisement offering goods or services, more an
announcement of something perhaps relevant to people who post on here -
and even if it were an advert, according to the charter for this group
(http://www.usenet.org.uk/uk.rec.gps.html) adverts are allowed.

John.

Never been particularly up-to-date, even in my youth :-)
This was the first time Id come across this particular petition though,
and thought it would be of general interest.

Seems a lot of people are out there promoting and supporting this
particular petition though. Just checked the number of signatures
gathered, and its now over 800,000. Thats a rise of about 80,000 in
the last 24 hours!

And what do the other 59,800,000 people in UK think?
