I owned a TomTom Classic for over two years until some toe rag just stole
it from my car. It was splendid with accurate clock and adequate maps and
clear loud speech. The things I missed most were no voice announcement of
road names and insensitive receiver (and the need for an external and so
visible antenna was probably a factor in its eventual demise).

I contacted TomTom and they assured me that I will be allowed by them to
activate any of my already purchased maps on any new TomTom equipment with
which they are compatible.

Ive been reading disheartening stories about newer models both having
flaky clocks and also stalling and rebooting, but I cant tell if these
are regular events with plain vanilla systems or rare events or connected
with systems modified by hacking (performing changes not recommended by
TomTom) to splash screens and the installation of additional applications.

So Im reluctant to plunge back into the market now, both because current
models are somewhat suspect and also rumours have it that we are on the
verge of new maps being released for both Europe and North America. Im
also stalled on choice of equipment model - the new One looks great for
portability but the voice road name announcements in the 910 is a welcome
feature. I do not need Ipod, Bluetooth or remote control functionality.

At this point I may wait until post-Christmas sales of the 910, so long as
it comes with new maps, but any other thoughts on a strategy for how and
when to proceed will be appreciated. For example - does anyone know about
the possibility that voice road name announcing will be added to the One?

Dont waste your money on a 910. Unless of course you want a mediocre mp3
built in. IIRC the 710 does nearly everything else, including voice to text
announcements..

My 910 is out of the box apart from the official TT updates which seem to
be happening fairly regularly. It doesnt lock-up quite as much as from new,
some update must have done something useful!
The clock can be a pain if you worry about it, although, since the last
update, the 910 has been much better, not perfect but better!

Yep the clock part is a four letter word begining with S. However if you
want accuracy the satellite data clock (as opposed to TomToms) is always
correct.

Ive had a 510 for a couple of weeks with only a small amount of use and so
far it has been good to me, no lock ups at all.

In contrary to Greybeards thoughts the 710 AFAIK does not have text to
voice. Its only advantage is full european mapping over the 510.

You are most certainly correct. I gave up looking at the TT specs a goodly
time ago, as I have decided that this one is about to enter the world of
ebay and Ill stick to Garmin thank you very much ;o))

Thanks to you and to Daz for the comments.

I wonder what went wrong? My beloved Classic never had any clock problems
and the newest software made syncing in different time zones easy. The
very original software was a PITA because Sync always set the clock back
to Amsterdam local time, but that was later sorted and the latest left the
adjusted hours alone and just tweaked the minutes. It is indeed odd that
there is even a Sync function when others like Garmin do fine without it.

Is the One Rev3 clock any better than the x10 clocks?

Also is the One Rev3 voice loud enough for driving in a noisy car? The
Classic had a most commanding shout.

Have you thought about going down the PDA route, Tony? Ive had an iPAQ PDA
and TT3 upgraded to TT5, for over two years with very few problems. Im
using a Think Navi cradle with built in receiver and I cant fault it

No because I have no interest in the other PDA functions. I carry a
sub-notebook (Thinkpad X40) for such purposes so need just a dedicated
navigator. I believe a PDA would be steps backwards in compactness,
sensitivity, audio volume and screen size.
