Am I right in thinking that the 510 and 710 are identical machines apart
from the difference in map data that comes with them?

Also I currently have an original GO with the European (seamless) map on a
2Gb card that I bought direct from Tomtom a month or so ago. Will I be
able to use this in a 510 and effectively have a 710 or is it now
permanently locked to the original GO?

You are correct, the MoWE map set though IIRC will not work as it is a
V5 map, the x10 GOs are v6.
