Hi Folks
I don`t use my Garmin GPS 12 often but need it for a project.
I had some leakproof batteries in it which have leaked(??). One of the
plastic plates holding a battery terminal has become loose and I need
to remove the cover just to araldite it back again. I can`t see any
obvious screws and removing the rubber back showed nothing is it just
clipped in position? Don`t want to knacker it completely prising it if
its not supposed to.
Cheers
Steve

If I recall correctly, the GPS12 is ultrasonically welded together around
the centre seam to make it waterproof. Theres one small orifice somewhere
with a waterproof membrane to let it breath and adapt to atmospheric
pressure changes.
I dont think you can open it without breaking it, unless you are either
very lucky or very clever.
I beleive that the models sent back for repair get recycled in new cases.
Sorry, its probably not what you wanted to hear, is it ?

Regards,

- Steve

Thanks for that Steve.
So much for using `leakproof` Duracells.
Cheers

- Worth a try, I would have thought if they really were Duracells. Oh, now
you tell us youve thrown them away?
Shame about the GPS12 though - I had a 12XL for years and it was a very good
reliable unit.

I remembered ths post when I found my TI-82 calculator had leaky alkaline
batteries yesterday (not Duracell). White corrosion al over the place.
Fortunately it all dissolved by scrubbing with water and a tooth brush and
its as good as new again. So its three cheers for the quality of the
plating on TI products. Wonder if Garmins is as good.
