Seems to me to be taking ages to find GPS satellites on startup. Drove all
the way from Lowestoft to Thetford (not the most built up area) before it
decided that there were any up there? And even then only seems to find two
or three at a time
Is this a known problem?

Cheers

What car do you own?

Some car manufacturers fit athermic heat reflecting windshields that
block the satellite signals. French made cars are a favourite for this.

If this is this case you may need something like

And if the signals that bad, stay stationary until the GPS locks on as
its much harder for it to do when moving.

Own a citroen C5 so it could well be the windows...although cant find
anything in the handbook about athermic glass.

I did a little experiment this afternoon by taking th Go out into my back
garden (backs onto open countryside). Locked on all bars within seconds so
it would appear to be my car rather than the TOMTOM.

Looks like I will have to buy one of those aerial gadgets...

Thanks for the advice !

PSA (Citreon, Peugeot, Renault) vehicles tend to have athermic windscreens.
Later GPS Receivers have SiRFIII chipsets which are unaffected by the solar
coating but youd be well advised to get the official TomTom external
antenna for your 700, I have one in my wifes Renault Megane and it makes a
huge difference to reception.

I have the TomTom external aerial but have it mounted internally on my Corsa
up behind the rear-view mirror where there is a clear patch for such
electronic devices/tags etc. I know that some Peugeots have a space near
the lower part of the windscreen that is clear, have a look at your
handbook if possible.

Unless, of course, you are still in your garage or parked under railway
bridge

You may get away with getting a signal via a side window or by trying
different positions around the outer edge of the windscreen.
