I have two friends each with a Navman PiN 570 and both experience repeated
lockups when attempting to use certain functions within the GPS software.
One friend has put Tomtom 5 on his and has no problems with the reliability
of the software and in fact prefers Tomtom to SmartST. Im not sure which
chip is in the Navman but it is not that sensitive compared with SirfStar
III models. At the time of purchase, last December, these were about Ł250
each.

My girlfriend has an Asus MyPal A632 with integrated Destinator software.
That seems to work quite well although the thing will not always wake up
from sleep mode and needs a soft reset, which does no harm and only takes a
few seconds but is a small irritation. It has post code navigation but she
seems to find many post codes to be missing. This cost Ł280 in February this
year.

I have a T-Mobile MDA Vario and use Tomtom 5.21 on that with a Holux GPSlim
236 bluetooth SirfStar III GPS receiver. That works well and seems, to me,
to offer the best all round performance. It is more sensitive than the
Navman and has better post code data than Destinator. I also run Memory Map
software on the Vario which allows me to plot and trace routes across the
countryside using OS maps.

The Vario was free on contract with T-Mobile with 9*Ł16 + 6*Ł35 + 3*Ł16 to
pay on an 18 month 200 minute + 40MB data contract, totalling Ł402 over 18
months. The Holux GPS was Ł75 from eBay.

Based on what Ive seen I would avoid the Navman and go for either the Asus
or the PPC/phone solution depending on how you want to split up your
devices. There are also integrated PDA/GPS/Phones such as the Mio 701 -
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC ID6350 - but review(s)
Ive read about this device are not glowing.

Of course, theres also the cost of the Tomtom software if youre not happy
with the supplied SmartST or Destinator software, or go with the phone based
solution. Thus on balance I guess the Asus probably offers the best
combination of performance vs cost.

Hope that helps.

Can I ask what you want out of a PDA solution? Perhaps a Smartphone
solution might suit?

Hi,
I just want portability, and be able to use my well spent money for
other uses, istead of just using my Tomtom, for when i am in the car.
I would be nice to have other uses, that i can use on the PDA

I guess alot of it has to do with the mapping software that is
provided. From what I hear and from my experience, try to find
something that has maps from tele atlas.
