Hi,
What software is there for PDAs (h1940 with bluetooth reciever
specifically) for navigating cross couintry. Im going walking around
Weymouth area.
Ive only ever used TomTom so unfamiliar with other software,
though to be honest TT5 sometimes thinks Im in the middle of a
field!!!!!!!! :-0

Cheers for advice

How long will your walks be? And how does that compare to the battery life
you experience with your h1940 with bluetooth switched on and the screen
brightness at max for viewing outside. If its like my PDA(entirely different
make), that wouldnt give you more than a couple of hours at best.

If thats not long enough, you might be better off considering a dedicated
hand-held outdoor unit (which will also be rugged and waterproof, unlike the
HP unit). Neednt cost much more, depends if you are looking for map display
or just the ability to check exactly where you are against a printed map.
You can get ones which will give a colour map display comparable to tomtom
but battery life is seriously reduced by having a colour screen, plus they
are much more expensive. I had a magellan Gold which was a good halfway
house, black and white map screen, you would get about 8-10 hours use with
it switched on all the time.

I brought a battery pack for my Mio on ebay for Ł3.99 - takes 4xAAs. One
charge lasted 2xdvds on return flights to Italy and 2x150km journeys using
TTN5 so should last a few hours walking.

Just remember that in the countryside, in the middle of a field, or in my
case in the middle of miles of trackless moor, Post codes are useless. You
must be able to use National Grid References, as shown on OS Explorer and
OS Pathfinder maps.

Not quite true where the Garmin units are concerned. The colour Legend
for example has a rated battery life of 32 hours, whereas the black
and white Legend (which I own) is rated at 18 hours.

The colour ones are indeed a lot more expensive though, the colour
Legend is nearly twice the price as the black and white one.

Id have bought the colour one in preference to the black and white
one, if only it had a serial port. With only USB and not serial you
cant plug the colour Garmins into a PocketPC and use TomTom :(

Anquet do a PDA version of their software, but it needs to be loaded via
a PC.
